Alice in Wonderland

Design Approach Statement
This is not your typical Alice in Wonderland story. It still includes the basis of Lewis Carrol's original story but it is written as a devised theatre piece. Going into it, I knew that the director needed a simplistic, clean set to do a big movement piece. He also wanted the seating to be tennis court/alley seating. This meant that I had to be careful that everyone could be seen at all times. While talking with the director, I realized that the movement he was talking would be like chess pieces moving on a chess board. So I brought this idea up and he loved how abstract it was so I designed a black and white chessboard for the floor. I also realized that we had the mezzanine playing space so I knew that I needed Alice to "fall down the rabbit hole" and ladders seemed like the smartest and safest option. So when she did the scenes in reality, she would be on the mezzanine, and then she'd climb rather than fall down the rabbit hole.
